  • In general, claims are limited up to a certain amount. For example, in California, you can only sue for up to $10,000 if you are an individual, or up to $5,000 if you're a business.

  • Depending on your state, you may or may not be allowed to have a lawyer to represent you. Even if it's allowed, hiring a lawyer might not be cost-efficient for the amount of the case. Often time, you will need to prepare and manage the case all by yourself.

  • If you win the case, you have to collect the money yourself. The court does not handle collection for you.

  • The appeal rules vary greatly from state to state. Some do not allow appeals; some only allow appeals to the losing defendant. If appeal is allowed, you generally have to file an appeal notice promptly (usually within 10-30 days) and have to pay additional court fees.

  • Check with your state or local courts for details or specific limitations.
